For years the honest answer ended in a deferral: you need it for calculus. This is calculus. The bill comes due here, and it pays. The question “how fast is it changing right now?” is asked daily by every science, every market, and every public-health office alive — and this course does not walk you to its edge, it hands you the answer, in the form The Derivative makes precise. The second answer is about transfer: you may never compute a cross product after June, but you will spend a lifetime modelling messy situations, checking claims before trusting them, and arguing from constraints. That training happens here whether the algebra resurfaces or not.

Questions worth arguing about:

  1. “When will I use this?” is sometimes an honest question and sometimes code for something else — frustration, being lost, a fair complaint. How could a classmate tell which they just heard?
  2. A headline says “cases are still rising, but more slowly.” That sentence is about a derivative and about the derivative of the derivative. Who benefits when the public cannot tell falling from rising more slowly — and who pays?
  3. List three quantities from your own week whose rate of change mattered more than their value. Whose job is it to notice?
  4. Nobody asks a basketball player when they will use wind sprints. What is different about mathematics — or is anything?
  5. For once, nobody can answer “you need it for next year” — the deferral has run out of road, because this is the course the deferrals pointed at. Does arriving change what the question means? Defend your position.
