Most studying that feels good does not work. Re-reading notes feels smooth because the material is familiar β€” but familiar and known are different things, and tests examine known. The fix is one idea: retrieval practice. Memory strengthens when you pull something out of your head, not when you push it back in one more time.

The nightly loop

Class already hands you the loop: every day ends with two or three check-your-understanding questions. That night, ten minutes:

  1. Try the questions cold β€” notes closed, no peeking.
  2. Mark yourself honestly against the class page.

Ten honest minutes nightly beats two loyal hours the night before a test, and it is not close.

Space it out

Cramming stores things where next week cannot find them. Revisit ideas after a day, then a few days, then a week β€” practice pages such as Limits Practice and Chain Rule Practice exist exactly for the return visits, long after their units end. By the end of the course, the chain rule should have been retrieved in every unit since it was learned β€” inside an exponential, inside a sinusoid, inside the optimization whose constraint got substituted in β€” not met once and abandoned. Forgetting a little and re-retrieving is not a failure of studying; it is the studying. And it matters more this year than ever: university calculus assumes this course is retrievable, not just passed.

Notes to your future forgetful self

The notes you write after each thinking task have one reader: you, in exam week, having forgotten today. Write for that person β€” one worked example in your own words (a chain rule derivative with the inner derivative circled and the reason it must be there, an optimization with the endpoint check shown and the reason it mattered), a sentence about when the idea gets used, and the mistake you almost made. Then, when studying, resist opening them: attempt a problem cold and consult the notes only to settle the argument between you and your memory. A note you had to reach for is remembered; a note you re-read is merely visited.
