1. Number talk: Visual Patterns — squares of dots, growing: how big is each jump, and why?
2. Random groups: the derivatives of $x$, $x^2$, and $x^3$ on one board, your $x^{17}$ conjectures beside them — find the machine
3. Counter-examples invited: does the machine survive $x^{50}$? A constant? $4x^3+x$?
4. Consolidate: Derivative Rules — power, constant multiple, sum, difference: conjectured first, stated second
5. Practise: Derivative Rules Practice, first set
