Being stuck is not an emergency — in this course it is the expected state at the start of every thinking task. But there are two kinds of stuck. Stuck-and-thinking is still generating moves; it feels uncomfortable and is quietly productive. Stuck-and-spinning is rereading the same line while feeling worse; nothing is moving except the feeling. Five moves, in rough order

  1. Re-read the problem aloud. Actually aloud, or at least moving your lips. A shocking share of stuckness is a misread question — “when is the velocity zero” is not “when is the position zero”, and “maximize the volume” is not “maximize the surface area” — and the ear catches what the eye skims.
  2. Try a smaller case. Optimization too big to set up? Build one specific box first — a base of 10 cm, say — and compute its volume; the general setup is that arithmetic with a letter in it. Three dimensions too many? Solve the flat cousin first. Visual Patterns surrenders to whoever shrinks it, and so does nearly everything else here.
  3. Sketch it. The sign of the derivative on a number line before any values, the two vectors drawn head-to-tail before any components, the situation of an optimization drawn with its variable labelled. Paper holds the picture so your head can hold the thinking — no problem in The Box Problem ever started without a diagram.
  4. Estimate the size of the answer. Before solving, ask: should this tangent slope be nearer 5 or 50? Must this angle be acute, because the dot product came out positive? An expected size gives you a wall to bounce ideas off — and flags nonsense the moment it appears.
  5. Explain the stuck-point to someone. Not “I don’t get it” but “my optimal width came out negative, which cannot be right because a box cannot have a negative side, so my constraint must be…“. Half the time you hear the way forward as it leaves your mouth.

When to step away

If all five moves are spent and you are spinning, stepping away is a strategy, not a surrender — brains keep working on problems in the background, which is why solutions famously arrive in showers. Leave yourself a note about exactly where it broke, come back after a walk or a sleep, and if the wall is still solid, that is what Getting Help is for.
